OVERLANDING I:
INTRODUCTION OF OFF-ROAD VEHICLES & DRIVING

Our Overlanding I: Introduction of Off-Road Vehicles & Driving is the perfect first step into the world of Overlanding. Nestled in the Appalachian Mountains, Twin Mountain Off-Road Adventure Center provides both instruction and versatile terrain to acclimate yourself to your vehicle and the sport.

This is a one-day (8 hours) Educational Experience. 

Our goal is for you to leave our facility with a solid understanding of how your 4-wheel drive vehicle works and how to safely and effectively navigate obstacles off-road in a manner that protects both the vehicle and the environment, and confident in your driving abilities. That’s why the instructor tailors each class specifically to your knowledge level, needs, and rig. 

The class will begin with an informational demonstration using our custom proprietary instructional aids. This lesson will take you through basic engine mechanics and how they apply to typical terrains you may encounter while Overlanding. 

From there you will learn how to identify key parts of YOUR engine ensuring you are to approach obstacles on the trails safely in your rig. 

After the instructional portion of the class, you’ll take to the trails for real-life training and implementation of the skills you’ve learned. 

This class is not just for Overlanders! It’s also a great tool for new drivers. The techniques covered in this class ensure that you (or your new driver) is prepared for all driving conditions.

Class Requirements:

Participants are expected to bring their own vehicle. The vehicle should be road legal and pass a visual inspection for safety concerns. Seat belts must work and be used.

Want to get more familiar with the sport before investing in a vehicle? Rental Vehicles can be provided for a daily fee + damage fee.

Topics covered

Engine, cooling system, driveline, differentials, transfer case operation, engine braking, left foot breaking technics, torque control, correct gear selection, understanding of computer-aided traction systems, suspension systems, tire choices and compromises, tire pressure. T.R.E.A.D LIGHTLY principles.

Practical skills

Better understanding and knowledge of their vehicle to include:

Ground clearance heights, differential locations, recovery point locations, air filter location, experience the difference between high range and low range, engine braking, left foot braking, and torque control.

Participants Will Experience and Learn to Perform

Steep hill ascents and descents using correct gears failed hill climb responses, off-camber and side slope operation, water crossing, axle articulation, left foot braking techniques over a log course.

OVERLANDING II: BASIC RECOVERY

When Overlanding, it is to be expected that at some point you will need to recover your vehicle from some type of stuck position or difficult terrain. 

This Level II class builds upon our Level I skills and terrain training and incorporates the use of recovery equipment. 

Participants will gain a working understanding of basic recovery equipment, its correct set up and uses, what to look for when purchasing, how to inspect equipment for damage, and caring for your equipment.  Along with understanding of the force needed/involved in recovering your specific vehicle or equipment, the process of planning and running a recovery effort in the most effective and safest ways available will be presented.

Topics Covered

Mindset, stuck assessments, mud math, equip rating, basic equip, Hi-lift, tow strap, KERR, types of  winches, the mysterious pully block, & rigs.

Practical Skills 

Students will learn to evaluate stuck vehicles, look for recovery options, calculate the loads and forces needed for an efficient and safe recovery. Understand and be able to recognize the types of ratings on recovery equipment allowing them to purchase the right equipment for their use.

Understand the loads (both electrical and weight) being placed on a vehicle during the use of an electric winch, how to rig a Single line, Double line and Redirect.

Participants Will Experience and Learn to Perform

Safe basic operation of the Hi-lift jack, basic winch set up and operation performing a recovery of a vehicle.

OVERLANDING III: TRAIL SKILLS

In order to reach remote locations and unforgettable experiences, it is almost certain that you’ll have to navigate difficult terrain on higher-level trails. This level III class ensures that you’re prepared for any terrain you may encounter. 

At Twin Mountain Off-Road Adventure Center our instructor will take you hands-on through how to approach obstacles and dangers you may come across on trails and guide you through each scenario. Our location in the Appalachian Mountains provides a perfect training ground.

CLASS Requirements

Twin Mountain Off-Road Adventure Center Basic Recovery Class or a Basic Recovery Class by another certified I4WDTA trainer.

Topics covered

Rollovers, belaying, multiple pulley rigs (including SB, traction, and momentum recoveries), Tow outs. 

Practical skills

Students will learn by practicing all the various skills performing real-world recoveries.

Participants Will Experience and Learn to Perform

Load and force calculations, stuck assessments, recovery planning and executions.
